We say these words multiple times each shift. They’re so normal to us, we don’t even recognize their power. It is an exchange among strangers with a solemn promise:
“I’m your Nurse.”
Three simple words- only one syllable each, but these words hold such power and meaning. Shrouded in these three syllables is a vow. Even when that vow is prefaced with “I don’t think I can handle another patient” or “Only ten more hours between me and a day off.” It is still a vow. A vow to critically think, analyze, prioritize, advocate, listen, encourage, empathize, support, facilitate, educate, and love compassionately. It’s the ultimate unsigned contract agreeing to an intense and immediate intimate relationship. Very few statements match its power.
“I’m your nurse” – What do these three words mean to you?
